Artificial Intelligence is everywhere these days — writing, driving cars, and now, apparently, telling photographers how to do their jobs.
Depending on who you ask, AI is either the next great leap in creative freedom or a soulless pixel-pusher that will steal our jobs and leave us photographing cats for exposure.
The Good
AI-powered editing tools are already speeding up post-production. Programs like Adobe’s Firefly and Luminar Neo can remove backgrounds, fix lighting, and even replace the sky faster than you can say “Photoshop 1990.”
For commercial photographers, this means less time doing tedious edits and more time perfecting the shot — or drinking coffee while AI handles the dust spots. While you need a good shot to begin with, small imperfections can be eradicated in seconds with an invisible mend.
The Bad
Of course, there’s the “creative integrity” debate. Purists argue that AI-generated elements risk turning authentic photography into glorified stock imagery.
If AI decides where the sun should set, whose art is it really? And if AI can conjure a product shot without you, that’s one less client ringing Hire and Fire Studios.
The Ugly (or Beautiful, Depending on Your View)
Fashion photographers are already experimenting with AI-generated models, perfectly styled and eternally wrinkle-free.
Great for budget-conscious campaigns, but bad news if you’re a human model who likes lunch breaks.
AI can also analyse trends and suggest styling ideas, which is either genius or creepy, depending on whether you trust algorithms to set the season’s vibe.
We Reckon…
AI isn’t going away, but instead of fearing it, we should learn to use it as a tool — like a light meter or tripod (only with more existential dread!).
AI is the intern who never sleeps, works for free, and sometimes turns in work so bizarre it belongs in a modern art museum, and it’s not just about 6-fingered hands! While it’s becoming better (not perfect!), it can enhance a good image and save drudgery. As a tool, it’s a time-saver and sometimes can give ideas (generative fill or image). However, it will never surpass human creativity. It’s brilliant tech, but it’s just that – tech. It’s not your brain or soul. Remember that.
Studio Photography & Videography: Mixed Lighting, AI & Virtual Backdrops
In 2025, studio photography and videography are evolving rapidly, especially in fashion, product, and performing arts shoots. One of the most exciting developments is the use of mixed lighting—particularly creative integration of projection mapping, LED lighting, and traditional flash—alongside AI-enhanced workflows and virtual production.
This combination allows professionals to create layered, immersive visuals without the need for physical sets or elaborate props.
Mixed Lighting & Projection: Creative Control Like Never Before
Mixed lighting is no longer just a technical challenge—it’s a creative strategy. Combining projected visuals, continuous LED lights, and controlled flashe gives photographers and videographers new tools to sculpt mood, dimension, and depth.
In fashion photography, projections can replace physical sets entirely, throwing textures, colors, or scenes directly onto backdrops or talent. This technique—used by high-end publications like Dazed and Vogue Italia—creates otherworldly visuals with minimal post-processing (PetaPixel, Fstoppers).
In product photography, projection enables dynamic storytelling. A rotating object lit with mapped graphics can simulate movement, use-cases, or branding in-camera—perfect for campaigns on tight timelines.
In performing arts, projection is used to simulate stage lighting, create atmosphere, or sync visuals with choreography in real time. Projects like Sadler’s Wells Digital Stage and Cirque du Soleil’s rehearsal studios are leading examples (Creative Bloq, DigitalCameraWorld).
AI-Enhanced Post-Production: Faster, Smarter Edits
AI tools are now standard in professional workflows. Services like RunwayML, Adobe Firefly, and Topaz Photo AI reduce hours of retouching to minutes.
- Skin retouching and colour correction are more accurate than ever
- AI masking allows faster object isolation from complex projection-lit images
- Motion tracking in videography is enhanced by AI scene recognition
This is especially useful when mixed lighting introduces unpredictable shadows or textures that would traditionally be hard to clean up.

Virtual Production: Real-Time Backdrops, No Travel Needed
Virtual production technology—using LED walls or green screen composites—is now viable for mid-sized shoots. Rather than building physical sets, you can shoot fashion campaigns in a Moroccan bazaar or performative dance in a digital forest, all inside the studio.
Projection can augment this by adding lighting spill from the virtual scene to the subject, blending digital with real in-camera. It’s this synergy that’s setting high-end creative studios apart.
