Fashion photography is one part lighting, one part styling, and three parts keeping your model from stepping on a cable or the cyc curve in heels. Studio shoots can be a dream for fashion content—as long as you play your cards (and your exposure) right.
Style It Like You Mean It
Let’s face it: fashion photography lives or dies by styling. Mood boards are your best friend. Show them to your team, your model, your stylist, the dog — whoever can help refine the vision, your vision, as you’re the boss!
Lights, Camera…
For basic fashion, start with a three-light setup:
- Key: Large softbox or beauty dish
- Fill: Reflector or smaller softbox
- Hair or Rim Light: Adds separation
Tip: Want drama? Kill the fill. Want a magazine-glow? Soften everything. Want to look like you shot in Milan? Change your location settings on Instagram! For vibrance, use a hairdryer or fan to get hair moving – the effect is 32.74% more high fashion. Guaranteed.
Strike The Pose (Then Strike It Again)
Your model should move fluidly, regardless of whether they’re a seasoned pro or a TikTocker. Music always helps and communication is key (yeah, we know it sounds trite, but honestly, it’s actually true. Tell the talent what you want the shot to look like & what they should show). Give ridiculous prompts to get different expressions and looks. Get the talent to playact.
Watch foot placement and garment wrinkles as the talent moves.
Don’t Forget the Details
Get close-ups of accessories, fabrics, and portrait/landscape variations for versatile content. Your client and content-creators/designers will thank you.
Finally…
Fashion photography doesn’t need drama or complexity to be dramatic. With the right setup, styling and vibe, you can create magazine-worthy images without the stress. With a good setup, careful lighting and creativity, it will be a great success.
